The Amal Center for Advocacy and Recovery was established in 2014 in the city of Antakya, Turkey, located near the Syrian–Turkish border, which hosts a large number of refugees from various regions of Syria.

Amal Center strives for a world where the voices of Syrian women are raised and heard, in pursuit of equality in human rights and social justice.

Amal Center works with and for Syrian women to advocate, network, and empower them to support one another in building a peaceful society where all people live with dignity and safety.

Amal Al-Nassan is a Syrian lawyer and human rights activist, specialized in documenting human rights violations since 2011, including torture and enforced disappearance. After seeking refuge in Turkey in 2012, she joined several training programs with prominent international human rights organizations such as Amnesty International and Physicians for Human Rights, and received advanced training in human rights and documentation with French lawyers, in addition to training on United Nations mechanisms and reporting methods with a specialized French human rights expert. Drawing on her direct experience and close relationships with survivors, victims’ families, and the families of the disappeared, she recognized in 2014 the urgent need for a women-led human rights organization in Turkey’s Hatay province to support these groups in the absence of similar initiatives. She developed the strategic plan and objectives and launched the Amal Center for Advocacy and Recovery. Since its founding, the Center has provided integrated services including legal support, psychological support, capacity building, and advocacy, and has earned the trust of thousands of Syrian refugees. It has also built partnerships and cooperation networks with Turkish organizations, UNHCR, and Syrian and international organizations. For more than ten years, the Center has continued to serve the most vulnerable groups ,women and girls, survivors of detention and torture, and the families of the forcibly disappeared, while implementing specialized projects in partnership with international organizations, including the “Our Voices” project to strengthen women’s participation in the transitional justice process. Amal Al-Nassan believes that justice will inevitably be achieved, and that advocating for victims, empowering them, and supporting their psychological, legal, and social recovery is the path to entrenching human dignity and building a more just future.
