“Our Right” Campaign in partnership with the International Commission on Missing Persons
Amal Center for Advocacy and Recovery, in cooperation with the International Commission on Missing Persons, launched a campaign entitled “Our Right” aimed at highlighting the legal challenges faced by women of the missing in Syria. The campaign sought to bring their voices to the international community and decision-makers in order to support their rights and uphold justice.
Campaign Objectives
- Highlight the key legal problems faced by women of the missing, and explain the impact of losing a husband/breadwinner on their legal and family status.
- Deliver clear messages to the international community and decision-makers to support the cause and improve the related legal and procedural frameworks.
- Raise community awareness about rights, obligations, and available remedies, while facilitating referrals to specialized legal services when needed.
Key Messages of the Campaign
The suffering of women of the missing in Syria does not stop at not knowing the whereabouts and fate of their husbands; it worsens when their legal rights are stripped away or lost.
- The urgent need for legal recognition of the status of the missing and its impact on the rights of wives and children (alimony, custody, guardianship, property).
- Simplifying and unifying procedures before the competent authorities, and ensuring the provision of free and fair legal assistance.
- Protecting the privacy of families and preventing their exploitation, while providing safe, multi-disciplinary referral pathways.
